PENTATONIC BASS SCALE

The pentatonic bass scale is a five note scale. This scale can be a major pentatonic scale or a minor pentatonic scale. The pentatonic scale originates from a seven note scale. The pentatonic bass scale is a key scale to all soloing and improvising in all styles. What makes it unique is due to the fact that it is a five note scale as opposed to your full seven note scales. It is important to understand that the dropping of two notes from a seven note scale to a five note scale, creates a different set of sound intervals.

The five note pentatonic scale is therefore specifically used because of it's five note construction. Rock, blues, country, and other styles use this scale. Aside from the fact that the pentatonic bass scale is a great scale to use because of its sound, there is another very nice, helpful and key feature of the pentatonic bass scale that can help your greatly when soloing and improvising.

The pentatonic bass scale is easy to apply over a wider range of chords when soloing and improvising due to the fewer notes in the scale. This makes it is a great scale to fall back on when you feel you either don't have much understanding of how to apply other scales in various situations or because you have become lost at the moment and just want to get back to something that will sound okay. It may not be the best sounding option in every situation, but it can be used in most situations without sounding like you have no clue as to what you are doing.

Bass scales come in many names and alterations, so there is much to be understood in regards to using and applying them. As one of the key building blocks of bass and music, scales are one of the three blocks that includes chords and arpeggios.
