INTERMEDIATE BASS

Intermediate bass players are ready to move beyond: the 5 pentatonic scale and chord patterns and shapes, the basics of modes: mixolydian, lydian, aeolian w/ chord matching, some arpeggios, note for note bass songs, transcriptions and licks, and soloing without understanding what they are doing.

They want to get down to business and put all of their partial bass concepts and understanding all together. The intermediate bass player can "play" the instrument. They have the physical skill to some level of proficiency. They usually have some musical and fretboard knowledge of chords, scales and maybe arpeggios and some theory. However, this stage of playing is usually the one that most players never progress beyond.

Is it desire, discipline, other interests? Sometimes yes. Most often for the intermediate bass player, it is due to the fact that the learning methods they have used have not given them the confidence or enlightenment that they need to ever "see the light at the end of the tunnel". The intermediate bass player becomes frustrated and settles for the false belief that he or she will never be able to really get a grip on their bass and the art of improvising, etc. no matter how much time and money that they spend trying to learn more.

They realize that learning songs is not teaching them anything and that they are truly missing a real education, but every time they try some book or online course or cheap software program, they end up learning a few more ideas that seem interesting but leave them in the same intermediate bass, "Land of the Lost", place that they have been stuck in for years.
